A club to explore great books and ideas related to software leadership.
First of all, thanks for considering hosting a bookclub meeting! Your willingness to share your enthusiasm and perspective for a book is exactly why we started this group!
Here are some things you’ll want to think about:
One of our goals is to move the discussion around to various locations throughout Philadelphia — this will give our members a chance to visit many of the great workplaces in the city. We hope that you will be able host our meetup in your place of work, but if you can’t, please let us know, and we’ll work with you to find a meeting space for your discussion. We normally allow up to 20 people to register for the meetup and expect that around half will attend.
Below are a handful of tips that have worked well for us thus far:
Start with a round of introductions (if the group size is amenable to it). In addition to the usual asks (name, employer, job title), consider asking a question of your own (e.g., What brought you here today?).
Come up with a handful of questions that are relevant to the book content. They may be questions taken directly from the book, or questions that came to mind as you were reading it.
Lead questions with relevant quotes and ideas from the book. This helps provide context for folks who may not have read the entire book.
Extract characters or personas from the book and ask attendees to comment on them. Push to consider both positive and negative interpretations.

As a host, please make sure you are comfortable following the PHLSLBC Code of Conduct: Philadelphia Software Leadership Book Club is dedicated to providing a harassment-free community for everyone, regardless of sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, body size, race, nationality, or religious beliefs. We do not tolerate harassment of community members in any form. Participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the community at the discretion of the PSLBC organizers. These rules apply to our monthly in-person meetups, any interactions on meetup.com, our Slack channel, or other PSLBC-related communications.
Harassment includes offensive verbal or written comments related to sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, body size, race, nationality, or religious beliefs, deliberate intimidation, threats, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any PSLBC event or communication channel. Community members asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.
If a community member engages in harassing behavior, the PSLBC organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender, expulsion from the PSLBC community, and/or expelling the offender from the venue we’re presenting in. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact an PSLBC organizer immediately, or as soon as you feel comfortable doing so.
Finally, because this is a book club, we are going to be reading and discussing books that address many issues. We expect our members to be open, honest, curious, respectful, and tolerant of others’ points of view. However, recognizing the paradox of tolerance, we will not tolerate intolerance in any form in any meeting or communication channel. This will be considered a form of harassment, and will be addressed as described above.
